New Student Support Scheme Announced

Lomond Energy has signed a unique agreement with Clydebank College to establish an Educational Trust Fund to provide finance for student places.

Signing with Clydebank College

Lomond Energy submitted a planning application for a ten turbine wind farm at Auchenreoch Muir, Bonhill last year. If consent is granted Merkins Wind Farm will be West Dunbartonshire’s first major green energy project, and will bring much needed jobs and income to fund local community projects.

A package of local benefits has been drawn up including a £1m commitment to fund apprenticeship places for 16-18 year olds at the College during the wind farm project’s 25 year life.

Places will be available to students living in the West Dunbartonshire area and the Educational Trust Fund will provide financial support for skills training through the College’s pre-apprenticeship programme.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the college by Steve Macken, Director of Lomond Energy and Gordon Paterson, Principal of Clydebank College on Friday June 21.

Steve Macken said: “We are delighted to have reached this agreement with the College. Renewable energy is a 21st century growth industry and there is increasing demand for much needed skills within this expanding sector. By funding student places we will be helping to equip young people from West Dunbartonshire with the skills needed for a career in this and other engineering and construction industries of the future, it is very pleasing to be able to contribute in this way”

Gordon Paterson said: “Clydebank College has always been committed to supporting our local communities and invigorating the local economy. At a time when Clydebank College is about to become a vital and integral part of the new West College Scotland, the agreement with Lomond Energy will continue our proud tradition of supporting local engineering opportunities through skills apprenticeships that will directly benefit young people across West Dunbartonshire.”
