Local Firm Submits Community Windfarm Plans
Gartocharn based renewables company Lomond Energy has submitted its plans for a windfarm near Bonhill. If successful it will be West Dunbartonshire’s first major green energy project and bring much needed income to fund local community projects.
The £35m project features 10 modern wind turbines on Auchenreoch Muir at Merkins Farm, with main access to be taken via the Auchencarroch landfill site, The turbines will produce enough green electricity to supply a third of all the homes in West Dunbartonshire, with the power from the turbines to be fed directly into Strathleven substation near the new Aggreko plant.
Lomond Energy Director, Steve Macken said, “It’s been a long haul to get to this stage where the project looks right, avoids sensitive features on the site, and above all takes account of views expressed by local residents. But we’re now happy that we have the right design in the right place, and expect it to be a key anchor project for West Dunbartonshire. This windfarm, a first for West Dunbartonshire, will not only bring local benefits in terms of green energy, jobs and funding for community projects, but provide inspiration and stimulus for our area to play its part in a future green economy.” said Mr Macken.
In the meantime local communities have been invited to participate in owning a share of the wind farm, the income from which will directly benefit local projects such as those identified in the Kilmaronock and Balloch Community Action Plans.
“Lomond Energy is passionate about renewable energy and the true benefits that it can bring not only in tackling climate change and increasing our energy independence, but also to communities in the form of sustainable economic development and local job creation. As the project is being developed by a local firm with local communities set to own a share, we can ensure that a significant portion of future revenues will be retained within West Dunbartonshire”, said Mr Macken.
The project already has the thumbs up from Gartocharn community, when voters gave it their support in a poll commissioned last year by Kilmaronock Community Council.
