Public Overwhelimingly Backs Wind Power

A recent Sunday Times commissioned YouGov poll showed continued strong support for  wind farms in the UK, despite a recent high profile campaign of anti-wind farm stories within some sections of the media.

The poll showed that the further development of wind power enjoyed stronger support than that for nuclear power, gas and coal generation, and was broadly consistent with previous survey results.

Commenting on the poll Steve Macken said:

"These findings alongside previous surveys demonstrate that a majority of the public understand and support the need for new windfarms, do not mind seeing wind farms in the landscape and are clearly not taken in by misinformation constantly regurgitated by the anti-windfarm lobby.   We take comfort from the results that the industry continues to enjoy a strong public mandate in helping our shift to a future low carbon economy which relies less on imported energy and more on free renewable fuel."

Lomond Energy’s next project, Merkins Windfarm, is expected to be submitted to West Dunbartonshire Council this month.  The company is currently working with local community stakeholders to ensure that its economic benefits are retained within West Dunbartonshire as far as possible.  A poll of voters in the nearby National Park village Gartocharn showed clear support for the project, confounding local critics.

“We see Merkins as a key anchor project for West Dunbartonshire as it will not only bring local benefits in terms of green energy,  jobs and funding for community projects, but provide inspiration and stimulus for our area to play its part in a future green economy.” said Mr Macken.
